Derailing the Cain Train

I like Herman Cain – he’s fun to listen too I think his down to earth personality has been refreshing in the midst of career politicians and diplomats. I recognize od course that he might not have a total grasp on foriegn affairs but it is true that our greatest challenge is domestic rather than foreign. His practicality has caught the right mood and that side of his personality resonates with many. On the other hand, his increasingly haphazard handling of various seedy allegations has threated to derail a once promising campaign. While I hope his candidacy can survive, I fear it may not. One can only hope that Fox gives him a time slot like Huckabee and we can enjoy his bright and jovial on air personality further. Of course he may be deflecting accusations next week that he is a serial killer – so maybe Roger Ailes might want to hold off on the job offer!!

There is so little that is happening in the political and social world that I can heartly endorse, that I feel unable to say AMEN to anything – and that bothers me! In the political realm, candidates are shooting themselves in the foot and becoming befuddled and discumbobulated (good word!) by pirahna-like media. In society we are being bombarded by lurid tales of sexual abuse that threaten to besmirch the world of collegiate athletics. As a believer I am wired to say AMEN – that is to say “I whole-heartedly agree!” I want to be able to say that about ANYTHING……Alas! I am left to my half-hearted endorsements and grudging acceptance of “the way things are…” But deep inside my soul I am an idealist – one that believes the best and “hopes all things”. I need someone to rise up out of the mediocrity of contemporary life and say the right thing, do the right thing and behave the right way…..can anyone say AMEN to that ?!!

We held our first annual Governmental Prayer Breakfast at Taylor hall in Grenada, MS today. What a joy to see so many community leaders turn out AND be willing to be prayed for!!

James Meredith

I was glimpsed for a second brandishing a guitar on the 10:00 pm news last night (WABG). I was helping out a friend, singing and playing for a Black History program in Shaw, MS. The keynote speaker was James Meredith, (in)famous as the first African-American student to enroll at Ole Miss. His speech was more of a rambling commentary ( at one point he completely lost his train of thought…) on the state of the black community and its need to heal, strengthen, and educate itself, in light of diminished resources and an eroding sense of self discipline. At times Dr. Meredith sounded like a right-wing Republican and at other times like a mellower Stokely Carmichael. He remains however mostly an enigma and a far from comfortable fit in the pantheon of civil rights heroes.

After a bout with the flu and a return to work, pausing briefly to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. King, I am now formally back in the routine. As I did last year, I’m taking part in a partial ‘fast’ and am finding in beneficial both physically and mentally. Giving up caffiene, meat, and most sweets has meant the loss of a few pounds and an increase in energy. Hopefully that will also mean an increase in creativity. Kindling update….

I have just finished reading “Decision Points” by George W. Bush which I found believeable and totally reflective of the man himself, as far as he appeared to me over the course of his presidency. Apart from the cartoonish caricature of him that dominated the media for the length of his incumbency, he managed to maintain not only he dignity of the office, but also it appears his self-respect. A man who makes decisions based on principle never needs to apologise, though he may have made errors, or regretted the unforeseen consequences of steps taken.
All in all I found his explanation of his decisions to be thoughtful and reasoned, not at all based on the whim of popularity and expediency.

Thanks to a Channukah present…..I’m now in possession of a brand new Kindle – the digital reader from AMAZON. So far i’ve just downloaded a few interesting books – mostly free from amazon.com. Whether I’ll have the discipline to keep reading a book all the way through remains to be seen…..

Had a good day in class today – my students are somewhat engaged and I have been motivated too teach.
We finished reading “A Christmas Carol” this morning! Now I shall have to surprise them with the movie as a treat!!

Been away too long

Time passes …life becomes hectic and important tasks such as blogging fall by the wayside. It doesn’t help to have an increased workload and other pressing duties that crowd out the opportunity just to “blather”!
Anyhow, for whatever reason – I find myself posting again – only this time with nothing of great import to say – just a casual wave of a hand to the blogosphere and a hope that sooner rather than later – words, ideas, even innovations will begin to flow.
